Summer Construction at Sharon Springs Central School District
Here's what we did over summer vacation.
Over the summer we spent a lot of time working on the Capital Construction Project at Sharon Springs Central School District. The project was designed to address a number of the District’s concerns. This included replacing the remainder of the aging roof elements of the District’s main building. Also included was an addition to greatly expand the weight room facility, allowing more space for students, as well as community use. Enhancements are being made to update the finishes and improve the flow of the Guidance Suite. Reconstruction of the District’s soccer field to be a top of the line playing space with proper field drainage and spectator seating is a major part of the work.
Work for this project began prior to the students leaving for the summer in June with preparations made at the area of the Weight Room Addition and preparations for the sitework needed to construct the District’s Soccer Facility. This included moving out existing equipment and getting the site ready for demolition. To ensure this project was ready to move forward after graduation the contractor worked carefully with the District’s Administration, Clerk of the Works and the Teitsch-Kent-Fay Architects, P.C. team.
One of the major items is the complete reconstruction of the School District’s Soccer Field. The existing field had chronic issues with it being slightly too small and consistently wet because of poor drainage. To remedy this we created a much enlarged playing surface “crowned” in the center for improved drainage, with new sod surface and an irrigation system. The new plan also included accessible walks and spectator seating to allow everyone access to view the games
In 2014, we assisted Sharon Springs School District in replacing the part of their roof over the original building. The roof needed to be replaced because it had reached the end of its useful life. Now nine years later the rest of the roof (which was originally installed in 1999) needs to be replaced. Another major element of the project is to remove and replace more than two thirds of the roof over the K-12 school building. This work began with an enormous vacuum removing the existing stone ballast from the roof. This stone ballast will be repurposed for drainage material on other parts of the project. The new roof will be a fully adhered single ply system that will be easier for the District to maintain while simultaneously providing protection of the educational spaces below.
In addition to these two main projects, our team will also be assisting the School with various renovations throughout the original building. These include reconstruction of the District’s Guidance Suite, and the construction of several fully accessible, gender neutral toilet rooms. Additionally, the asbestos-containing flooring in eight Elementary School classrooms is being abated and a new luxury vinyl tile floor being installed. These rooms are also getting new unit ventilators and air handling equipment to improve indoor air quality.
This project also includes several new additions, such as the expansion of the second floor Weight Room room. The school previously had a very small weight room. This addition will triple the size of the previous one, allowing the students as well as the community members greater opportunities for physical fitness. The new space will allow for the physical therapy program to have a larger, more permanent facility to assist students who are disabled.
Improvements, funded by the American Rescue Program include the addition of a new greenhouse, adjacent to the existing Agricultural technology classroom. This space will allow the District’s vibrant Agricultural technology program to expand and provide new experiences for the students. Also included is a new covered pavilion adjacent to the District’s playground that will give students a way to play outside no matter the weather.
We are glad to share that the roof work and interior renovations have been completed. The soccer field is scheduled to get the new sod surface the first week of September and be ready for the senior class to be honored at homecoming. The greenhouse and weight room will be completed throughout the school year. We look forward to seeing the completion of this project.
